US Lacrosse was founded on January 1, 1998, as the national governing body of men's and women's lacrosse. Although US Lacrosse has only recently emerged within the national lacrosse community, a closer look reveals an organization which represents the past and the future of the sport. The Minneapolis/St. Paul area Middle School Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association (MSSLax), founded in 2003, organizes and supports middle school schoolgirls' lacrosse leagues. The goal of the association is to facilitate competitive play for middle school teams during the spring girls lacrosse season, stressing skills development and sportsmanship.
